Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch detained in Spain as part of investigation into suspected money laundering

Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch is understood to have been detained in Spain as part of an international police investigation into suspected money laundering.

The Irish Examiner reported it heard from multiple security sources that the 61-year-old head of the Hutch family was detained by the Guardia Civil during searches in Lanzarote on Wednesday morning.

A close associate of Hutch is also understood to have been held by police.

Hutch’s detainment follows an operation spanning more than two years by Guardia Civil and An Garda Síochána.

A high-level team from the Garda National Bureau of Crime Investigation accompanied their Spanish colleagues in the searches.

An officer from Guardia Civil was present for the single search in Dublin, which was carried out at the home of Hutch in Clontarf, north Dublin.

Guardia Civil are expected to release a statement and video on Thursday, the Irish Examiner reported.
