An hour before he went onstage to the cheers of 15,000 people at the 3Arena in Dublin last night for the second of the Wolfe Tones’ three farewell shows, Brian Warfield was finishing his pint at the bar of the Gibson Hotel.

He said he was too busy preparing for these final gigs to follow what was going on with his beloved Mary Lou McDonald and Sinn Féin and the party’s recent difficulties.
