The Northern Lights could put on a ‘breathtaking’ display over Ireland this weekend
The Northern Lights could put on a show across Ireland this weekend with recent solar flares creating the potential for a “breathtaking” display.
The display, also known as aurora borealis, is most likely to be visible in the north of the island.
However, there is potential for the lights to be seen further south, as in May this year, due to intense activity on the Sun.
Met Éireann said the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights is in locations with very small amounts of light pollution. Depending on the cloud cover, parts of the west and north coast would offer the greatest chance of seeing the display, it said.
A 30-minute forecast for the aurora borealis is available from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
