Sinn Féin press officers resign after giving references for ex-colleague who later admitted sex offences
There are questions for the Sinn Féin leadership following the resignation of two party press officers who provided references for a former colleague who later admitted sex offences, the opposition leader at Stormont has said.
SDLP MLA Matthew O’Toole said it was a “serious situation” and indicated he would be seeking further answers from the party.
Seán Mag Uidhir and Caolán McGinley resigned as Sinn Féin press officers on Saturday, days after it emerged that they had given references for former colleague Michael McMonagle for a job at a charity.
Earlier this month, McMonagle (42), from Limewood Street in Derry, admitted a series of offences, including attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.
Sinn Féin said the references were provided without clearance from the party and described the press officers’ actions as “unacceptable and wrong”.
