A Fine Gael senator has said the Government should make hormone replacement therapy (HRT) free for all women experiencing menopause in Budget 2025.
Limerick city Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne has said publicly-funded HRT would be a gamechanger for women’s health.
Ms Byrne said investment is needed to help women that are facing high medical costs associated with menopause.
“Currently, HRT is free for medical card holders, but many women without a medical card face costs ranging from €30 to €70 a month,” she explained.
“This is on top of the cost of going to a GP which costs upwards of €50 per visit and in some cases, the cost of having to see a consultant.
“We have seen so many advocates dedicated to campaigning to make HRT freely available for all women and the last few months we have really seen this conversation being brought to the forefront.”
