For years, the inter-county season and club season were intertwined, and how they were structured was at the hands of the individual county boards.

One week you could be lining out with your inter-county team-mate trying to win a provincial trophy and the next week, you could be locking horns in the Club Championship as rivals — and then expected to return for county duty, unharmed and uninhibited by what went on at club level.
