Man (40s) arrested and bank accounts seized in counterfeit mobile phone probe worth €10m

A man aged in his 40s has been arrested as part of the investigation into the supply of counterfeit mobile devices.

Members of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested a man yesterday, September 11, as part of Operation Shrike.

It is estimated that the phone company involved has been defrauded to the tune of €10 million.

It comes as 14 bank accounts have been frozen so far while more than €143,245 in cash has been seized as part of this investigation.

The investigation is run by the Intellectual Property Crime Investigation Unit based in the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The man is currently detained at a Garda station in Dublin under the Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007. “Investigations are ongoing,” a Garda spokesperson has confirmed.
