‘A very special lady’ – One of Ireland’s oldest residents Ruby Druce (108) shares her secrets to a long life
Ruby Druce from Castlefin turned 108 on New Year’s Eve and following the passing of Galway’s Phyllis Furness (109) in August, she is one of the oldest women in Ireland.
“When we told her the news, she just asked ‘am I?’, as calm as you like,” her niece Carmel Harran said, with whom Ruby lives.
“We have heard since then that there is a woman in Northern Ireland who turned 109 last month.
“But, if God spares her, Ruby will be 109 on New Year’s Eve,” said Carmel.
Born on New Year’s Eve 1915, to George Crawford and Elizabeth, née McBride, Ruby was the eldest of five children.
In her long lifetime, Ruby has lived through two World Wars and two global pandemics.
In 1918, the Spanish Flu sadly claimed the lives of her baby sister and younger brother, who both died in the same week.
