Gardaí launch 24-hour speed enforcement operation as school traffic returns to roads

One motorist was identified as travelling at 75km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Rochestown Road in Cork, while another was caught driving at speeds of 60km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R752 at Ballydowling in Glenealy, Co Wicklow.

Gardaí also identified one motorist travelling at 111km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N3 Lisgrea in Co Cavan as they continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits.

The examples of high speeds were identified by GoSafe, a safety camera operator contracted by gardaí, with figures expected to be much higher once data from garda personnel detections become available.

The national ‘slow down day’ is targeting all motorists to remind them of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and to “deter those that are intent at driving at excessive of inappropriate speed”.

There were over 70,000 fixed charge notices issued to motorists driving over the speed limit up to the end of June, amounting to over 375 drivers each day.
