Brilliant in life, love and legacy’ – Memorial unveiled in honour of two men who died during Ironman competition
The east Cork town of Youghal organised a special evening of remembrance to commemorate the first anniversary of Brendan Wall and Ivan Chittenden.
The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a special plaque to honour both athletes whose deaths shocked both the east Cork town and wider world of Irish sport.
Brendan Wall (45) of Cardrath in Slane, Co Meath and Ivan Chittenden (64) of Toronto in Canada died on August 20, 2023 after they separately experienced difficulties in the water during the challenge.
Sea conditions were challenging that day and competitions were both shortened and delayed because of the weather.
A lone piper from the Youghal Pipe band played a lament as relatives of both men laid wreaths on the falling tide at Youghal strand.
Canon William Bermingham, Canon Tom Browne and Archdeacon Andrew Orr recited prayers during the ceremony.
Framed photographs of the two men were positioned beside the beach wall and flowers and candles were placed around them.
