A search in a remote area of Co Louth for the remains of a murdered Army captain is concentrated on “three or four” sections making up one acre of farmland.

Robert Nairac was killed and secretly buried by the IRA in May 1977.

The first search for his remains got underway today.

It relates to “specific areas” of farmland, the man leading the search said.

Jon Hill, the lead investigator with the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains, said information gathered by his team has been evaluated as “more than worthy” of justifying the search.

Nairac was abducted from the Three Steps Inn pub in south Armagh in the early hours of May 15, 1977.

He was taken over the border, where he was interrogated before being shot and buried.
