Presenter Sharon Tobin used in latest ‘deepfake’ scam as RTÉ acknowledges ‘growing challenge’
A so-called deepfake video using the likeness of Six One News anchor Sharon Tobin promoting a fake investment scheme has emerged on social media platforms including Facebook in recent days.
When contacted about the video, a spokesperson for the state broadcaster described the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology as a “growing challenge” which they are taking seriously.
The broadcaster also pledged to “pursue the matter” with the owners of social media platforms.
In the footage, a digitally altered version of the Ms Tobin is shown against an RTÉ newsroom backdrop speaking with an AI- generated voice.
Recently, RTÉ director general Kevin Bakhurst warned presenters against appearing in videos or photographs on the grounds of Montrose or with the station’s official branding without permission in an attempt to control the use of the RTÉ brand.
