Gardaí investigating if Dublin man was carrying loaded gun over significant drug debt

The handgun seized by gardaí on Friday.

A young man who was previously unknown to gardai for involvement in organised crime spent the week travelling around north Dublin with a loaded handgun in a messenger bag.

However he was arrested when gardaí observed him and two other men sitting in a car acting suspiciously in Finglas yesterday afternoon.

The suspect aged in his 20’s, who is from Ballymun, is understood to owe a significant drugs debt and officers are investigating if he had the lethal weapon for his own protection.

When gardaí interacted with the suspect who has minor convictions he attempted to assault them but was restrained before officers discovered the loaded weapon in his bag.

It is being investigated whether the three Ballymun men were in the Finglas area to purchase drugs but no substances were seized at the scene.

One man (20s) arrested in connection with this investigation has since been charged and will appear before the courts this afternoon. The other two men…
