Private funeral for pensioner who lay dead in Cork home for almost two years
Complaints about pest issues by locals residents led to Tuesday’s grim discovery
The family of Joyce O’Mahony (68), whose badly decomposed body was discovered in her home near The Lough on Tuesday afternoon, said that she was “deeply regretted” as they confirmed her funeral arrangements will be private.
The O’Mahony family, in a death notice, said that Joyce would be “deeply regretted by her family and friends”.
She was the daughter of the late Dr Timothy O’Mahony and his wife, Patricia ‘Patsy’, a noted piano player.
Joyce was the sister of Jakki, Peter and Paul.
Neighbours at Brookfield Lawn said that Joyce was a kind-hearted woman but who was intensely private.
One local said that she would often decline to answer calls to her door.
Campaigners for elderly rights have now called for a Department of Social Protection safety net to avoid tragedies where people who die in their homes go undiscovered for months or even years.
