Teenager charged with stabbing of army chaplain in Galway

The teenager arrested in connection with the stabbing of an army chaplain in Galway has been charged.

The victim, Fr Paul Murphy, was stabbed a number of times and is being treated for injuries that are serious but not life-threatening.

The army chaplain was attacked outside Renmore Barracks on Thursday night.

Defence Forces members fired warning shots and restrained a teenager at the scene, who was then arrested by Gardaí.

He is expected to appear before Galway District Court on Saturday afternoon.

An Garda Síochána reminds any member of the public reporting or commenting on this incident of the provisions of section 93 Children Act 2001, which imposes restrictions on the publication of any particulars, including any picture, which is likely to lead to the identification of any child concerned in any criminal proceedings.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
