Irish woman ‘lucky to be alive’ after dog attack in Spain

An Irish woman living in Spain has told how she and her dog are lucky to be alive after they were attacked by a Belgian Malinois breed.

Broadcaster Joan Larkin was left badly bruised and needing stitches after the attack in which her little dog Oscar also required urgent veterinary care.

“Oscar is an 11-year-old bichon frise rescue dog and is arthritic, so he doesn’t walk very fast,” she said.

“Last month, we were out for a walk about 7.30pm in the village where I live in the Valenciana region of South East Spain. I had Oscar’s lead, and he was trailing behind me.

“We approached a car which was parked outside a house on a quiet road that we walk almost every day. There was a Belgian Malinois dog in a crate in the open boot of a car, and he was going crazy as we walked towards it. He was barking and thrashing around in the crate.

“We walked past the car and the next thing I know is that I’ve been pulled off my feet and onto my back and the dog has Oscar in his mouth. He had…
