Garda Commissioner Drew Harris paid a six-figure sum to settle a legal action taken by a retired senior officer who alleged he was defamed on the internal garda Pulse system.

Mr Harris is believed to have authorised the high five-figure payment plus legal costs to Kevin English, a former superintendent in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.
