The Complex, Friday 1st November – Saturday 16th November
Following last year’s groundbreaking production of ‘The Rose Tattoo’ that reset the Tennessee Williams’ classic in a modern Irish Traveller setting, The Complex announces a brand new theatre production of ‘On the Waterfront’ by Budd Shulberg, written by the same author that wrote the Oscar winning film. This will be its premier in Ireland, directed by the Artistic Director of The Complex, Vanessa Fielding, with a cast of well-known Irish actors, featuring exceptional Dublin actor Lloyd Cooney. The play will run from 1st to 16th of November with previews on 30th and 31st October and matinees on Tuesdays 5th and 12th and Thursdays 7th and 14th November.
STORY:
After the murder of his best friend, Terry Malloy faces the threat of physical danger to himself and his family and his likely ostracization from the community, if he reveals the perpetrator. Poor education has left him with limited scope for employment outside the docks, and after his progress as a boxer was hampered by a mob side-deal, he risks all he has left. ‘I could have been a contender’ he declares, one of the most famous lines in film history, resonating with us all, and questioning the strength of our own values in the face of injustice, in a culture before worker’s rights and solidarity movements were an option.
