A garda investigation is under way into the fatal road collision which happened in Baldoyle at around 1am.

It’s understood gardaí received reports of a car, which was stolen earlier that night, being driven erratically in the area by so-called joyriders.

Emergency services were subsequently alerted to reports of a pedestrian being struck by the stolen car on the coast road in Baldoyle.

The car involved failed to remain at the scene and a major search operation was under way for the occupants today.

The victim, aged in his 40s, was treated at the scene but despite the best efforts of first responders he was pronounced dead a short time later.

One source said: “At this stage it’s believed the car was stolen purely to be rallied around by youths. It’s happening every night of the week and now it has unfortunately resulted in a man losing his life”.
