Bus Éireann Removes Additional Bicycle Charges
Bus Éireann recently announced the removal of additional charges for carrying bicycles on its Public Service Obligation bus services.
Previously, passengers were required to pay a fee of €10 per journey for bringing bicycles on these routes, a policy change that will be effective from April 7th, 2024.
The decision was made following consultations with the National Transport Authority (NTA) of Ireland, with the aim of encouraging the public to opt for more sustainable modes of transport.
Stephen Kent, the CEO of Bus Éireann, noted that this change is intended to ease the financial burden on passengers who choose eco-friendly commuting options.
Kent further explained that the waiver of fees applies not only to bicycles but also to extra luggage, and non-folding prams and pushchairs. He emphasized that, although the €10 carriage fee has been removed, the possibility of bringing these items on board still depends on the available space in the vehicle.
It’s important to note that this policy alteration does not apply to Expressway services, where a bicycle carriage fee of €5 per journey remains in place. Bus Éireann has not yet provided an explanation for retaining the fee on Expressway services.
In Ireland, public transport services have varied policies regarding bicycle carriage. Citylink, Aircoach, and GoBus charge €5 for bicycles, whereas JJ Kavanagh and Matthews offer free bicycle carriage, all subject to space availability on the vehicle.
Moreover, this policy adjustment is seen as a positive response to the national bicycle policy. Since the introduction of the National Cycle Policy for 2009-2020, improving the conditions for carrying bicycles on intercity bus services has been a focal point of government and public transport authorities.
While some cycling policies have been integrated into Ireland’s National Sustainable Mobility Policy, Bus Éireann’s initiative demonstrates a commitment to promoting multimodal travel methods and supporting eco-friendly transportation choices.
As efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote a healthy lifestyle intensify within the transport sector, Bus Éireann’s move is viewed as a significant step towards a greener, more sustainable future in transportation.
