The Green Party leadership race is on… Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman first to declare candidacy
Ossian Smyth TD said he hopes he is a future leader of the Green Party but said; “I am not going to run this time”.
However, Mr Smyth said he thinks Junior Agriculture Minister Pippa Hackett “is the person to lead the party”
“She hasn’t said she would run but if she is listening now, I would like her to consider running… if she was to run I would be willing to run as deputy leader behind her,” he said.
Mr Smyth was speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, where he stressed that he agreed with the idea that the party requires a “reset”.
He also stated that the party needs to counter the notion that it is in opposition to rural Ireland.
“Our last three leaders of the Green Party have been all from Dublin and I think we need to make sure we are clearly relevant from outside of Dublin as well,” he said.
