Three months after Leo Varadkar announced he was stepping down as taoiseach and Fine Gael leader, Eamon Ryan has followed suit in the Green Party.

With the party having recently lost half of its local council seats, and all of its European seats, many believed Ryan’s position had become untenable. A divisive figure through some fanciful policies and cringeworthy one-liners, Ryan steps down after 13 years at the helm.

The Greens’ popularity has dropped by nearly half since it formed a coalition government with Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil over four years ago. But the party’s recent electoral issues aren’t just an Irish problem, as the Green movement has been decimated at the polls across Europe in recent years.
