He was reacting to the health watchdog Hiqa’s report, which found there was no written approval from Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) to use the springs in three child spinal surgeries.
The chairman of the board of CHI has stepped down in the wake of the publication of a “devastating” report.
“My thoughts are with the families and the three children and the trauma that they have gone through and are going through,” Mr Martin told the Dáil.
“It is beyond comprehension that springs that are not permitted were used in surgery. The consultant concerned did use springs that were not CE marked. And that’s the fundamental issue here.”
