A hand that was discovered at a school in north Dublin belonged to a young teen who injured himself in a gas canister explosion, DNA tests have confirmed.
The body part was dropped into the school yard at Our Lady Immaculate school in Darndale by a bird on the morning of Friday February 21.
The school was on mid-term break and no children were present at the time.
The hand was discovered at around midday and gardaí were alerted.
A “prominent theory” in the early stages of the investigation was that the hand may have belonged to a local male child who suffered horrific injuries in a gas canister explosion at a bonfire in the Darndale area the previous night.
A number of children had been playing with the canister before the accident happened.
