Ireland now has the strongest passport in the world, according to The Nomad Passport Index for 2025.
It placed us in the top spot, followed by Switzerland, Greece and Portugal.
It’s the first time the Irish passport has held the position solo, after sharing the top spot with Luxembourg and Sweden back in 2020.
The criteria in the ranking includes visa-free travel, taxation, global perception, ability to hold dual citizenship and personal freedom, with Ireland getting an overall score of 109.00.
European countries hold nine of the top 10 spots, while the United States comes 45th.
According to the index they said: “Ireland takes the Nomad Passport Index top spot in 2025, edging out Switzerland as the back-and-forth battle between two of Europe’s neutral states enters its second year.
