It’s been teased, it’s been hyped, and now we know what Donald Trump meant when he talked about Liberation Day.

In a sprawling speech that trapezed across the globe, Trump singled out the countries and regions he claims have wronged America—delivering blow after blow at their economies.

Mr Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement slapped a 20pc tariff on goods being exported from the EU to the US. He also announced a 25pc tariff on all cars being imported to the US from midnight last night.

So, how has Ireland fared on a day that businesses and government leaders have dreaded for months? Okay for now, is the short answer.

Pharmaceuticals, of which Ireland is a major exporter, will not be subject to the reciprocal tariffs at this point. Neither will semi-conductors or aluminium, copper or wood. But a senior White House official said Mr Trump planned other sectoral tariffs for pharmaceuticals, among other industries.
