My first proper job in Irish journalism was editing tribunal transcripts for Vincent Browne’s nightly radio programme.
I became a transcripts nerd. My first play was an attempt to reconstruct a transcript of the night of the bank guarantee. My play The Treaty was partly based on transcripts of British cabinet discussions in 1921. Charlie Bird brought me the transcripts of a series of interviews he had done about the marriage referendum, and they became another play, A Day in May.
