Hundreds of children given needless hip surgeries, some allegedly for ‘financial gain’, Dáil told

At least some may have been carried out “for financial gain”, the Dáil has been told.
A majority of 561 hip surgeries on young children at both Cappagh and Temple Street hospitals were not medically warranted, the report found.
The audit has found that 79pc of surgeries at Cappagh and 60pc at Temple Street did not meet the clinical threshold for corrective operations.
The report was published on The Ditch website, with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe admitting today that it had been “published elsewhere”.
But he said it was not complete, because peer review had been invited. Clinicians are looking at the report in order to give “final input”, Mr Donohoe said.
When concluded, “there will be a need for urgent actions, including contacting families, and acknowledging the stress that many feel at the moment”, Mr Donohoe said.
Mr Donohoe added: “We need to understand if and why this happened in the first place, and what are the consequences of it.”
