There was a lot of football on TV this week. Some might even say too much. Or is that just me? Probably the latter. Live sport continues to dominate lists of the most watched programmes on almost every channel – and that’s just terrestrial TV.

Factor in the other pay-per-view channels, and you could spend your whole life watching men (and the odd woman) playing with balls. In a doomed effort to see the appeal I have tried periodically to join in, but what can I say? I’m easily distracted.
