A man from Northern Ireland who passed away while on holiday in the Dominican Republic has been named as 29-year-old James Gribben from Co Armagh.

A death notice posted by JJ McArdle & Sons Funeral Directors on Tuesday said Mr Gribben died as a result of a swimming accident while on the island.

He was described as the “loving son of John and Aideen, dearest brother of Tomas, Brendan and Henry”.

“Funeral arrangements will be published when available. Very deeply regretted by his sorrowing family and friends,” added the notice.

James’ father John said his son had gotten into difficulties after going for a swim while walking on the beach.

“The family is devastated by this unexpected tragedy,” Mr Gribben told the Irish News.

“James was a wonderful son with a big personality. He will be sadly missed by his family and circle of friends.”
