When the thuggish Conor McGregor went to the Oval Office and denounced an “illegal immigration racket” which he claimed is “running ravage” in Ireland, there were plenty of Irish people dismayed that he was seen as representative of Ireland on St Patrick’s Day.

But many of those denouncing McGregor are guilty of profound hypocrisy in their view of those who break the law in the hope of a better life abroad.
