The mother of the wheelchair-bound child was contacted and asked to attend with her son as then Minister for Disability Anne Rabbitte announced €3.6m in emergency funding for children with special needs around the country.

But none of the money was ever provided, said Sinn Féin Finance spokesman Pearse Doherty. “Not one red cent.”

Tánaiste Simon Harris accepted that it was true that no money was ever provided.

The revelation comes after weeks of controversy over the public being allegedly misled by Government during the General Election campaign that 40,000 houses would be built last year, only for the target to be missed and fall short by 25pc.

“I’m not going to stand up and defend something that cannot be defended,” Tánaiste Simon Harris replied to Mr Doherty.
