Taoiseach rules out cost-of-living package despite tariff threat and says Occupied Territories Bill won’t stop Israel’s ‘indiscriminate bombing’

As the trade tensions between the EU and US continues to escalate, Cabinet members including Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe have warned that trade tariffs could bring with them increased prices for households and businesses.

Last week, the Tánaiste Simon Harris said that Ireland is facing a “significant period of turbulence” in relation to trade and tariffs.

While cost-of-living supports were introduced to help households with the increased prices during the period of high inflation, these measures will not feature in Budget 2026, the Taoiseach said.

“Because of the challenging situation from a budget perspective, we have to be careful as well,” the Taoiseach said while attending an EU summit in Brussels.

“I think our focus on the budget would be on sustained provision within the existing estimates. There will not be cost of living packages, as happened last year,” he added.

However, he said he would not pre-empt Ireland’s response to the US tariffs due to be announced…
