Fianna Fáil TD suffers fractured shoulder after ‘nasty mugging’ in London

Fianna Fáil TD Malcom Byrne was the victim of a “nasty mugging” in London on Friday night.

The Deputy, who was in the UK for celebrations around St Patrick’s day, had been to the theatre with friends and was walking a short distance to his hotel when he was knocked from behind.

Mr Byrne’s mobile phone was stolen and he suffered a fractured shoulder in the incident.

He had his phone in his hand as he was on ‘Google maps’ at the time.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent this weekend, Mr Byrne said “it’s a matter of life that these things happen and unfortunately I will have the awkwardness of having my arm in a sling for a few weeks but I can live with it.”

Latest figures show that mobile phone theft have risen to a record level in London as the number of handsets being stolen has more than tripled in four years.

The Metropolitan Police has said that 70,137 phones were reported stolen in the capital in 2024.

The figure is up nearly 40 per cent from 52,428 2023.
