A man in his 30s is set to appear at a sitting of Mullingar District Court this morning charged in connection to an alleged ‘serious assault’ just over two weeks ago that left an elderly woman in hospital.

A man in his 30s is to appear in court this morning charged in connection to an alleged “serious assault” of an elderly woman in her home in Co Longford two weeks ago.

The man is the same suspect gardaí arrested and later released without charge a matter of hours after the alarm was raised in a residential area of Edgeworthstown on February 25.

He had been released from garda custody pending further inquiries by senior investigators.

The Irish Independent understands gardaí were given the all-clear to re-arrest the man following the return of DNA results on Tuesday.

The victim, who is of pension age, was taken to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for treatment.
