Ireland’s bail system should not be a revolving door for criminals, MEP says

Regina Doherty MEP is calling for a reform and proper resourcing of Ireland’s bail system following shocking revelations that individuals on bail were linked to over 40,000 crimes in 2024 alone.

“It is completely ridiculous,” she said. “When thousands of crimes are being committed by people who should be under strict bail conditions, it’s clear the system is not fit for purpose.

“We need to stop this cycle and ensure that those who break the law face the full force of justice.”

Doherty said there is a need for more resources for the criminal justice system, and said that those who repeatedly violate their bail conditions face the consequences of their actions.

“Everyone involved in our criminal justice system goes above and beyond to protect the public but they can often be constrained by the resources available to them.
