The Taoiseach has described warnings that Ireland will miss its 2030 emissions targets and face huge fines in consequence as “highly speculative”.

Micheál Martin was reacting to predictions by both the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (IAC) and the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC), who warned we are currently above trajectory to reach the required milestone.

They said subsequent fines, in terms of a requirement to buy carbon credits or offsets, could range between €8 billion and €26 billion.

Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik raised the issue in the Dáil today, saying that climate change messages had disappeared off the Gov.ie website.

The Taoiseach said in reply that he noted Ms Bacik had deliberately used the upper figure in the range €26 billion.

“It is highly speculative, by the way, and highly uncertain,” Mr Martin said, adding that he had listened to the authors of the latest warning.
