A mother of four autistic children who reported herself to Tusla, for having to leave her children unsupervised due to school transport delays, has now been elected as an independent councillor.

Carol Lennon says she is looking forward to ‘gladly’ giving up her carer’s allowance as she has taken one of seven seats on the Laytown/ Bettystown Local Electoral Area on Meath County Council.

Having the carer’s allowance meant that she was curtailed in spending time out on the canvas trail as it limits volunteering, study or work to 18.5 hours a week.

The mum of five from Mornington, Co Meath is a full-time carer to her four children with autism Tristan (22), Logan (21), Tiegan (17) and Xylan (16).

She hit the headlines in 2018 when she reported herself to Tusla for having to leave three of her children unsupervised while she drove the fourth to school 20km away – because of a delay in transport.

She had to leave her children at home to wait for their own…
