Taoiseach Micheál Martin meets Volodymyr Zelensky in Shannon, hopes for ‘sustainable and durable’ peace

President Zelensky met the Taoiseach during a short re-fuelling in Shannon on his way to America to meet US President Donald Trump for a meeting which may decide the future of Ukraine’s mineral wealth.

President Zelensky thanked the Taoiseach and Ireland for their support in hosting Ukrainian families throughout the war.

Speaking afterward, the Taoiseach said they discussed a range of issues. “In the first instance, he was very thankful to the people of Ireland for Ireland’s sustained support of the Ukrainian people as they battled through this terrible war,” said Mr Martin.

“Secondly we discussed issues around a sustainable and durable peace settlement. He was very clear that any moves have to be durable and comprehensive, involving significant security guarantees and deterrence into the future.”

The Irish delegation made it clear that they would push very strongly for an accelerated accession for Ukraine into the European Union.
