The Canadian Government have warned people visiting Ireland to be aware of catfishing.

Advice on the Government of Canada website says that if you travel to Ireland to meet someone you have met online, you may be the victim of a scam.

The website has a section under ‘safety and security’ titled ‘Romance scams’.

It reads: “If you’re travelling to Ireland to meet someone you’ve otherwise only met online, you may be the victim of a scam. Be wary of attempts at fraud by persons who profess friendship or romantic interest over the internet.”

People coming to Ireland from Canada have also been warned to be aware of petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching as tourists are regularly targeted.
