Victims of Wellington Quay bus tragedy remembered 21 years on

Dublin city’s Wellington Quay became a scene of utter chaos and confusion on February 21, 2004, when a Dublin Bus careered into a group of commuters, killing five and injuring 14.

Three women, Kathleen Gilton (69), from Maynooth, Theresa Keatly (43), from Ballymun, and Margaret Traynor (59), from Darndale, were among the dead, along with Kevin Gary (43), from Leixlip, and Vasul Tyminsky (33), a Ukranian living in Lucan.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after the unoccupied bus ploughed into commuters boarding a No 66 bus.

“Today marks 21 years since the Wellington Quay bus tragedy, where five people lost their lives. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died and were injured. And also to the our Firefighter/Paramedics, gardaí and Ambulance Services who attended the scene,” Dublin Fire Brigade said in a statement.

Most of the dead died at the scene, with fire crews describing the carnage as the most horrific they had ever witnessed.
