Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe at odds with Taoiseach as he rules out ‘harmful’ tax reliefs for developers to increase housing supply

Mr Donohoe was speaking in Brussels as he attended the EU’s Economic and Financial Affairs Council, where he said he would not introduce tax breaks that previously damaged the economy.

“What I’m not going to do is reintroduce or propose the very tax reliefs that did such harm to our economy, and then the building of homes for many years, in Ireland,” Mr Donohoe said.

The Finance Minister’s comments are at odds with those from his Fianna Fáil coalition partners made last week.

Last week, Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed the Government would explore tax breaks for private developers, while Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers told the Dáil that Ireland needed to be more attractive to private investment to boost supply.
