There is anger within Fine Gael ranks over the handling of the crisis surrounding Senator Martin Conway’s arrest for intoxication, while Mr Harris is coming under pressure from Sinn Féin to break his silence on the issue in the Dáil.
The Tánaiste said he first became aware of that matter late last year.
“There was a previous issue that predates my leadership by many years, In 2018. It came to the party’s attention in 2020. I became aware of this late last year,” mr Harris said.
“But from my perspective, when the issue had been examined, when an apology had been issued, when it was deemed at that stage that no further action was required, it would be a very unusual thing for a new leader to then reopen a matter in that context was deemed to require no further action,” he added.
