Fianna Fail has sought legal advice over a row about speaking rights in the Dail (PA)

Fionnán Sheahan, Maeve McTaggart and Ralph Riegel

Legal advice commissioned by Fianna Fáil on the speaking rights row that delayed the election of Micheál Martin as taoiseach has sided with Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy, concluding Tipperary TD Michael Lowry’s group is entitled to Opposition speaking time.

The Dáil was dramatically adjourned last week after failing to elect a taoiseach due to a row over the speaking rights of a group of four Independent TDs who support the Government, but would sit with the rest of the Regional Independent Group on the Opposition benches.
