Lorraine Clifford-Lee of Fianna Fáil has lost her Seanad seat — and must now pin her hopes on being directly nominated by the Taoiseach.

The ex-Senator is seen as having a good chance in that regard, given the pressure on the Government over gender-balance in appointments.

Ms Clifford-Lee had requested a recount, but it did not alter the result. Another Fianna Fáiler, former TD Joe Flaherty, who lost his Dáil seat in Longford-Westmeath in November, has also been eliminated.

Pauline Tully (SF) and Cathal Byrne (FG) have been elected on this Cultural and Educational panel, and the count continues.

Ms Clifford-Lee was not immediately available for comment on her disappointing loss.

Sitting Senator Seán Kyne (FG) was deemed re-elected on Ms Clifford-Lee’s surplus.

Independent Joe Conway has also just been elected — ending the count, with Shane Curley of Fianna Fáil also taking a seat.
