It is understood the Air Dome, located in Bekan near Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo, was blown down around 4am on Friday morning. The facility was built at a cost of €3.1m.

Known as the NUI Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome for naming rights purposes, the facility was opened officially in January 2022 and has proven to be a huge success. It was used for a variety of games across all codes and was capable of hosting concerts and other events.

The Air Dome was used frequently by club and intercounty teams within Connacht and had also become a facility used by the wider GAA community right across the country.

Connacht GAA secretary John Prenty told the Irish Independent the loss of the facility “is a loss for the whole association”.
