The Gardaí have sent a file to the DPP based on their investigations into the findings of the Moriarty Tribunal, 14 years after it issued its final report. Coming in the middle of government formation talks between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Independent TDs, it has again shone a spotlight on what the tribunal found about former FG minister Michael Lowry, who is now an independent TD for Tipperary.
Tribunals are traditionally named after the judge who presides over them (and sometimes change name – Flood Tribunal to Mahon Tribunal, for instance). This can obscure what they are about. The Moriarty Tribunal was about payments to politicians, specifically Charles Haughey and Michael Lowry.
