‘Live cockroaches in the kitchen, rat droppings and foul water’ – Why 2024 has seen more food business closures than last year

The past year has overtaken 2023 with 45 pc more food businesses being served closure orders citing poor hygiene and pest control issues

A total of 133 food businesses across Ireland were served enforcement orders by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) between January and December. Out of these, 115 were closure orders. That was a 45 pc increase compared to 2023.

“It is concerning to see a significant increase in enforcement orders in 2024,” said Chief Executive of the FSAI, Dr Pamela Byrne. “Consumers have a right to safe food and negligent food practices are inexcusable.”

“The types of reasons cited for enforcement orders are simple errors that should not be happening in any food business. Enforcement orders, especially closure and prohibition orders, are never issued for minor breaches; they are served only when a serious risk to consumer health is identified or when ongoing breaches of food legislation pose significant hygiene or operational issues.”
