Cancer patient runs gauntlet of icy conditions and speeding drivers for life-saving treatment

Louise Whitehead said her seriously ill daughter Rachael, and her daughter’s partner Alan, endured “hazardous driving conditions and maniacs speeding” as they drove from their home in southeast Clare to Bon Secours Hospital, Co Cork, for Rachael’s treatment.
Rachael Whitehead (31) received her cancer diagnosis from doctors just before Christmas after complaining of numbness in one of her legs. She is undergoing six weeks of intensive radiotherapy.
The mother to six-year-old son Leo recently qualified as a midwife, but she had not worked up enough tax credits to qualify for employment benefit.
Her family has set up an online fundraising account on GoFundMe to cover the cost of Ms Whitehead’s travel, accommodation, and ongoing medical and household bills. So far it has raised €24,000.
