The stark revelation came as garda chiefs said the rollout of new technology will play a critical role in improving road safety enforcement over the coming months and years.

Inspector Noel Barry of the Tipperary-Clare Roads Policing Division, speaking at a special bank holiday safety briefing, confirmed that a total of 137 motorists were detected for suspected intoxicated driving over the weekend crackdown.

The detections occurred between 7am on Thursday and 7am on Monday at checkpoints nationwide.

The rate of detections amounted to a motorist being stopped for suspected drink or drug driving on average every 42 minutes – a rate described by road safety officials as “alarming”.

No breakdown is available as yet as to the specific number of alcohol and drug detections.

Gardaí also dealt with a number of speeding incidents as part of the bank holiday crackdown.
